What is Parent Guidance?
Raising children is challenging and complicated, given life’s ever-changing circumstances.
Parents often find it challenging to talk and connect to their adolescent children about difficult topics such as puberty, sexual orientation, attitude, boundaries, depression and anxiety. We are here to help you start that conversation and to teach you how to connect, listen and communicate with your adolescent.
Parents may struggle to connect with their children and understand them. Parents may also have difficulty in understanding what is age-appropriate behavior vs. problematic behavior.
Parent guidance aims to equip parents with the tools necessary to communicate effectively with their children and understand their feelings and perspectives, with the end goal of building healthier relationships, and decreasing conflict.
TherapyNow Therapists bridge the gap that can sometimes form between parents and their children, so that each can understand the other.

Who Does Parent Guidance Help?
Anyone who is having any kind of issues with their child, from communication breakdown to full-on arguments, or simply constant misunderstandings – parent guidance can help.
Puberty, sexual orientation, attitude and battles to communicate can benefit from parent guidance.
Parents with a child who just “will not listen”, or does not respect rules and boundaries should also seek parent guidance. This includes insights into the fine line between harsh discipline and diffuse (unclear) boundaries or difficulty with enforcing discipline at all.
No issue is too big or too small when it comes to parenting.
If you would prefer sessions with your child/children and your spouse, consider family counselling.
Parent Guidance in South Africa
The attitude and involvement a parent can greatly impact the performance and overall well being of their child. Parent guidance aims to provide parents with the tools to aid their children as best they can, and positively impact on their emotional well being, while strengthening their relationship and opening avenues of communication.
I have a messy room. Deal with it.
I spend most of my life online.
I have private things on my phone.
I go to bed late.
Don’t get tired of me.
My music says more about me than my own mouth.
I feel everything. Strongly.
My friends and what they think is EVERYTHING.
Start Worrying About Me When
I stop showering or and my personal hygiene completely disappears. My room will still be a mess.
I stop talking completely and never come out of my room.
I’m awake all night and I sleep all day.
I make plans to end my life. Not just hints. Plans.
I’m worried and anxious about everything.
I have aggressive outbursts. Not normal irritation.
Teenagers are the most misunderstood people on the planet. They are treated like children and expected to act like adults.
