Disorders are often found to be severely shame based as individuals feel that they should be able to behave  “normally” without having the compulsions that they do. For example, “eating normally” without needing to overeat, purge, binge or starve. 

The same applies for individuals who struggle with intimacy disorders such as pornography, sexual anorexia, compulsive masturbating, affairs and seeking sexual validation outside of their intimate relationships. 

Gambling and self harm are also considered disorders, as they carry the same compulsion of needing to self-sooth. 

What disorders have in common is that at the root causes are unprocessed emotions, such as feelings of anxiety, depression, self-loathing, guilt, fear, shame, pain and lack of connection with self and others. What the disorder gives the individual is a release, or an escape for these emotions, which often stem from childhood trauma or current trauma. (PTSD or CPTSD)

The Components of Disordered Behaviour

A significant part of the disorder is the shame which is linked to a feeling of helplessness, powerlessness and unmanageable emotions due to individuals feeling that they should know how to eat, have sex, spend money etc, responsibly. These “normal” human functions are faced daily with difficulty and often without support, which contributes to feelings of shame and isolation. 

Through talk therapy the shame is broken and we start the process of understanding why the disorder has manifested and why one finds finds soothing through their specific disorder. We help clients understand that they are not their disorder, but the disorder is separate and merely a part of self-soothing which helps them assist in regulating their emotions.
